Google eBooks to debut in Australia

With the rise in electronic reading devices such as those available on tablet pcs, there has been a surge in the popularity of eBooks. Google is set to take advantage of this growth by launching it’s long awaiting eBook store in Australia.

Google will partner with local online book retailers Dymocks and Booktopia to provide their millions of free eBooks and hundres of thousands of paid eBooks to Australians. Booktopia and Dymocks will act as wholesalers of Google’s eBooks and will receive a cut of sales.

Australia is only the fourth territory for Google to launch their books with the USA, UK and Canada launching recently.

The eBooks provided by Google will be in either a PDF or a ePub format. These two formats are the most common format of eBooks and will ensure that it is compatible on as many devices as possible.

Lenovo release a range of new tablets

Unlike the netbook phase, it seems like tablets are here to stay. Lenovo has decided it is a good time to bring out a big new range of tablets.

Although the tablets are announced now, they will not be available until mid year and pricing is not yet available.The devices were announced during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

There is a new 7 inch tablet and a 10 inch tablet and both come with Google’s Android 4.2 operating system as well as MediaTek’s 1.2GHz quad core processors.

The ten inch tablet is called the S6000 tablet and Lenovo has described this tablet as a mobile entertainment system. The seven inch tablet is the A3000 tablet and this it the entry level budget tablet for consumers.

The devices have a five megapixel rear camera and a VGA front facing camera. The S6000 is super thin and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

November retail figures are out and it’s not pretty

There was great optimism that November would see somewhat of a recovery in the Australian retail market with most analysts predicting a rise of 0.3 percent for the month. However, much to the surprise of most people, retail sales actually fell 0.1 percent for the month leading up to the December holiday period. This was despite the fact that there was a rate cut leading up to November.

The sectors that had the biggest impact on retail figures was household goods retailing which had a big 0.9 percent drop. Then there was clothing and footwear which saw a 0.6 percent drop.

Some areas which had a rise were categorised under a non-specific area called other retailing which saw a one percent rise.

One area which did see a phenomenal rise was online sales. This area has continually chipped away at the bricks and mortar sales and is starting to take significant market share. The iPad’s market share

The iPad has been the reigning leader by far in the tablet market since it was released and figures show that it is attributed to other 90 percent of tablet web traffic. This dominance, however, may not last forever as tablets sold by Google, Samsung and Amazon are starting to eat away at the market share of the iPad. Citing research conducted in November over a one week period, data showed that the iPad still had 88 percent of web traffic. When you have such a large market share, you are bound to lose some of it to the huge number of entrants entering the market.
